My New York picks

New York Fall 2010 is officially over and I finally had the time to go over most of the collections to choose my favourite looks.

NY Fashion Week for me is always synonymous with one man: Marc Jacobs. An invite to his show is one of the most sought-after items of the week thanks in large part to his beautiful, sometimes quirky and always fun collections.

For this collection, he brought it back to the basics; classic lines, elegant suits, beautiful furs, long flowing dresses; it Old Hollywood glamour with a modern edge. Gone were the layers, the trashed-up motifs and the multiple references to different eras. Instead it was a very streamlined, elegant collection that I'm sure many women would love to wear.

And if you can't get into Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein would be next on your list of must-see shows.
Designer Francisco Costa experimented with silhouettes. Arms and shoulders were emphasized, giving coats and dresses a bit of a futuristic military feel. Waistlines were either moved up or dropped below, giving dresses new shapes. I am always impressed with Costa's technique and construction. He can mold material into strange new shapes that have never been seen before.

Here are my other favourite looks:

Derek Lam

Vera Wang

Zac Posen

Naeem Khan

Oscar de la Renta

3.1 Phillip Lim
Marchesa

To me, NY Fashion Week was going back to what they do best; sportswear, subtle elegance and wearable clothes. We saw a lot of new shapes, specifically emphasis on shoulders and arms as well as new waistlines. Leggings were nowhere to be seen (thank God!) and looser but tailored clothes were back. All in all, a great week of beautiful clothes.

Straight off the runway: Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway has been looking verryyy red carpet worthy lately, perhaps it's the magical touch of Rachel Zoe, her new stylist. Hathaway attended the Los Angeles premiere of Rachel Getting Married at the Writer’s Guild Theater in Beverly Hills on Monday night looking fabulous in a Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress from the designers Resort 2009 collection. Shoes by Christian Louboutin.

Straight off the runway: 'The Women' Premiere

Debra Messing is all class in a baby doll Oscar de la Renta dress from the designer's 2009 Resort collection. Messing finished off her look with Platinum by Niel Lane jewels and a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Eva Mendes still manages to look sexy in such a modest dress. Here the Calvin Klein model wears a black and white printed Bill Blass frock worn with DSQUARED2 pumps. I lovee the dress, but the Amy Whinehouse inspired hair do is unfortunately a no no for me.

Jada Pinkett Smith looks flawless in a gunmetal Zac Posen strapless gown. I love the beaded detail put into the dress and Smith looks absolutely stunning.

The beautiful Meg Ryan kept it simple in an elegant Valentino gown from the Fall 2008 collection.

ID that dress: Liv Tyler

I recently made a post of Liv Tyler attending the Piaget Hosts The Limelight Paris-New York Collection event in N.Y.C. Tyler opted for a stunning Oscar de la Renta oriental styled cocktail dress for the occasion, which she accessoried with Piaget jewels and black heels. The dress is available for purchase at Saks for $5990. If you want to try out this oriental style for a party or event with a lower budget, I've managed to find a dress online at www.edressme.com as shown below:

Straight off the runway: Penelope Cruz

The Elegy actress has been quite busy this month with the anticipation of her latest film to release soon, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which also stars Scarlett Johansson. Cruz has been donning some seriously chic outfits as she promotes the film which is set to release in the U.S on the 15th of August, 2008.

Looking stylish in her dancer-printed Matthew Williamson top and wide-leg jeans on her way for an interview on Good Morning America.

Photobucket

Picture perfect in a black Oscar de la Renta blouse and ikat skirt as she visits The Late Show with David Letterman.

Photobucket

Looking uber chic in a one shouldered LBD also from Oscar de la Renta's 2009 Resort collection.

Photobucket

This Herve Leger dress reminds me a bit of a Versace design. It looks fantastic on Cruz, the colour and the simplicity is executed perfectly.

Going for a more edgy look in this stunning Marchesa tuxedo jacket and feathered dress.

Straight off the runway: Jennifer Morrison

House actress Jennifer Morrison attended premiere of the Journey to The Center Of The Earth at the Mann Village Theater on June 29, 2008 in Westwood, California. To be honest, i hadn't heard of the film up until now, but it is a film of adventure based on the classic Jules Verne novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and stars the lovely Brendan Fraser as the central character. Morrison gorgeous as usual in tan embellished Oscar de la Renta frock from the Fall 2008 collection. I wish she had worn those shoes that were on the runway, they are so gorgeous!
